About NZRS

Who is NZRS?

New Zealand Domain Name Registry Limited - trading as .nz Registry Services (NZRS) - was established in May 2002 to operate and manage the registration of .nz domain names and the operation of the Domain Name System (DNS) in the .nz domain name space.

NZRS is owned 100% by InternetNZ. InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting and promoting the Internet in New Zealand and fostering a coordinated, cooperative approach to its ongoing development.

Also owned by InternetNZ is the Domain Name Commission Limited  which is responsible for the authorisation of .nz registrars; the development of policies and procedures; making sure all parties comply with the rules and that their rights and relationships are protected; and the ongoing development and monitoring of the environment for the registration and management of .nz domain names.

Who are the clients of NZRS?

The registry's clients are authorised registrars.

Registrars are authorized by the DNC (Domain Name Commison). To become an authorised registrar visit www.dnc.org.nz to view the Registrar Implementation Kit which contains all relevant information: registrar FAQ, technical specifications, the Authorisation Agreement, the Connection Agreement, and all associated .nz policies.

The registration of domain names and modification of information associated with that name on the register can only be done by authorised registrars. There is no direct relationship or communication between the registry and registrants. Registrars are responsible for managing their relationships with registrants.
